There are pros and cons to signing 35-year-old

With the Redskins seemingly connected to every quarterback, it's time to take a look at who might be their next passer. First up: Peyton Manning.

The case for » A healthy Manning provides the Redskins with a chance for their best quarterback play in a long, long time. Yes, he missed an entire year, but in 2010 he was still playing at a high level. He put on a passing clinic at times when he faced the Redskins that season. While the Redskins lack legitimate playmakers on offense, they can address this need in free agency and with their No. 6 pick. All Manning would cost is money. Also, Manning's ability to get rid of the ball quickly, making pre-snap reads, turns mediocre lines into solid ones.

The case against »

He'll turn 36 in March, and there is that injury situation. The fact that his neck is fine is not the point. It's all about the arm, and there's no guarantee it will return to what it was. So there's a definite risk. Also, Manning has been in one system his entire career. Mike Shanahan has run this system forever. Which one has to change? This would require serious adjustments from both sides -- and each is known for his desire to have control. As one NFL source said, Manning would become the offensive coordinator -- and if you try to have it any other way, it's not smart; you have to tap into his knowledge.

Why he would be interested » Because he at least would be playing for a coach who took a quarterback of a similar age and rode him to two Super Bowl wins. No other coach with a quarterback vacancy can say the same thing. The Redskins would have to upgrade the supporting cast as Shanahan has noted quite a few times since the middle of the season. They do have two quality tight ends. They have a solid defense. Others have attractive situations: Miami has more playmakers on offense and a solid defense. The Dolphins would be limited by the salary cap after signing Manning, however. They also have a coach who comes from a different offensive system.

Why he wouldn't » Because the Redskins would have to overhaul a system, one that the coach strongly believes in. How much would they change? One NFL source said that it was tough for Manning to play his younger brother in the past. Would he want to do that twice a year if he has another choice? If he signed with Miami, he could stay in a conference he knows. He has a home in Miami (and has since 2007). Joe Philbin comes from the Packers' system, but he's a rookie coach. If the owner signs Manning -- and it sounds as if he wants to -- then the owner will demand that he craft an offense for him. And Philbin will say, "Yes sir." And while the Redskins can improve through other means so, too, can other teams who are starting with a higher talent base.

Chance it happens » Decent. It's tough to bet against a Dan Snyder/Shanahan combination in this situation. But right now I'd lean toward him going to Miami. That lean changes daily, however, and as long as the Redskins are in the race, there's at least a chance it will happen.

Mark and Amy Denicore want to teach their three young children about personable responsibility. They ask each of the kids, all under the age of 10, to get themselves ready for the school day-brush their teeth, get dressed and get a good breakfast.

"We could do all that for them," Mark Denicore said, "but what kind of lesson is that?"

The consequence of such a lesson has meant the kids often pile into the car and arrive at Waterford Elementary School, half a mile from their home, a few minutes late. Two of the children have received 29 tardy slips, and one has received 27, this school year, according to school records. Most of those days, the children arrived between two and five minutes late, and two days they were more than 10 minutes late. At least two tardy slips state they arrived at 7:50 a.m.-the same time school begins.

Last week, Mark and Amy Denicore learned the severity of running a few minutes behind. They were served a summons to appear in court on a Class 3 misdemeanor for their children's excessive tardiness. They appeared at the Loudoun County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Monday, and could face as much as a $3,000 fine. Their trial is set for March 14.

The Denicores are the second Loudoun County Public Schools family summoned to court for tardiness in the past three weeks. Maureen Blake, also a parent of three elementary school children in western Loudoun, was arrested Jan. 21 and charged with three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Wayde Byard, the school system's public information officer, said the Denicores and Blake are the only to cases this school year that were taken to court due to tardiness. He reported 26 absent-related court cases this school year.

Mark Denicore expects more families will find themselves in the same situation soon. He knows of three other Waterford Elementary families who have received letters from the school system threatening legal action due to tardiness.

The Denicores' oldest daughter has attended Waterford Elementary for five years, but the family says they have never faced a stringent tardiness rule until this year, under new school administration.

The Virginia Code statute the Denicores violated, according to the court summons, states that parents "shall, during the period of each year the public schools are in session and for the same number of days and hours per day as the public schools, send such child" to school.

Mark Denicore points out that the statute does not say the child must attend every minute of every day, and it does not say there are criminal charges for violating the statute.

"I think that the law should be written in a way that shows a bright line of when you're acting as a criminal and when you're not acting as a criminal," he said, "and another bright line that shows here's the punishment associated with acting on this criminal act."

LCPS Director of Student Services Anne Lewis said last week that the school system's five truancy officers report parents to an intake officer with the Loudoun Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court if a pattern of truancy or tardiness persists, but it is rare.

"We first work with the families and the principal to address the problem that is causing the children to be late," she said. "We're looking to do what we can to make sure the children are safe and get them in school."

Denicore said his family received numerous warnings and correspondence from the school system about his children's tardiness, but they never had a conference with officials to discuss the issue. A chain of emails provided by Denicore shows that a meeting was scheduled with the school's principal and attendance officer; however Denicore requested the school system's legal counsel also attend. The school administrators did not respond to the request to have legal counsel attend, and the meeting fell through.

The situation these past two weeks has created a lot of stress in their household, said Denicore, who works as a civil litigation attorney in Washington, DC, and is considering representing himself and his wife in the case.

"We're trying to comply, and we're not thumbing our nose at their desire to have everyone in the school at the same time. We get it," he added. "We're just not perfect, and we're being held to a zero tolerance standard, which if you're less than a minute late you're tardy."

With the Recording Academy eliminating 30 categories at this year's Grammy Awards, there's not as many artists from the classic rock community nominated. But, classic rock will still be well represented at the Grammy Awards. 

Jeff Beck is up for Best Rock Album for Rock 'N' Roll Party Honoring Les Paul.

Beck, who was the most nominated rock act last year with five and winning three, paid tribute to his idol with two shows at New York's Iridium jazz club in June 2010 followed by a U.S. tour backed by The Imelda May Band.

Other classic rock acts nominated this year include:

Guns n' Roses frontman Axl Rose turns 50 years old today. Rose led to the band to superstardom in 1988 with his trademark scream on "Sweet Child O' Mine." But since then, he's ticked off thousands of fans across North America with his extreme lateness for concerts, penchant for walking off during sets and inability to release (in a timely fashion) a follow-up to the Use Your Illusion albums. Here's a chronological list of Axl's five greatest misses.

• November 1988: On the G n' R Lies EP, Rose offended homosexuals with the lyrics to "One in a Million," where complained about "faggots" who "spread some f---ing disease." The controversy got GNR dropped from an AIDS benefit show in New York.
• July 1991: 90 minutes into a show at the Riverport Amphitheater near St. Louis, Rose dove into the crowd to confiscate a video camera. After being pulled back on stage, he announced, "Thanks to the lame-ass security, I'm going home!" A riot started, causing $200,000 in damages. Rose eventually served two years probation for triggering the melee.
• August 1992: During a tour stop at Montreal's Olympic Stadium, co-headliner Metallica had to cut their set short after James Hetfield suffered burns in a pyro accident. But GNR didn't fill in the gap, as Rose was late getting to the venue. After finally going on stage, Rose complained he had vocal problems and walked off before they'd played an hour. A riot ensued, causing an estimated $400,000 in damages
• November 2001: A riot erupted at Vancouver's General Motors Place after Rose failed to show up for a scheduled concert. Another $100,000 in damages.
• November 2008: Rose finally allowed Chinese Democracy to be released, 15 years after GNR's last albums. He did no promotion whatsoever for the album.
